Being derived from our mortal enemies, the power of the Azure Dragoon is a double-edged sword. Even as it lends us the strength we need to smite dragons, it heightens our communion with the creatures, rendering our minds more susceptible to their seduction than ordinary men.

Even as I buried my lance in Nidhogg's flesh, our gazes locked, and mine eyes met then with a look that would fair impale a man. In that instant, I found myself assailed by a torrent of emotions not mine own...

Sorrow... Rancor... Pity... They threatened to drown the man in me and leave behind a dragon.

Fearing that I might turn traitor, I chose to purge myself of the power that the Eye had bestowed upon me.

Thus regaining lucidity, I was able to rout the grievously wounded Nidhogg.

Alas, countless of his brethren yet remained. As if to mock me, they fell upon Ferndale with a vengeance. Bereft of my power, it was all I could do to save but one child.

Nary a soul knows of this. Nay, not even Estinien...but I can keep him in the dark no longer.

At our last meeting, Estinien said that protecting Ishgard and exacting revenge upon Nidhogg are as one to him.

That frame of mind, I fear, may well lead to his demise. The desire to protect and the desire to avenge are opposing forces that can ill be reconciled. Worse, the latter serves only to cloud his sense of self.

When next Estinien and I meet, I intend to confess all, though it mean the loss of his good opinion. The outcome of the coming battle─and his very life─may well depend upon his readiness to relinquish his powers.

Never allow yourself to forget the origin of your strength. Ever does the dragon lurk behind your eyes, biding its time, ready to claim you for its own.

Aught less than complete conviction, and you will find yourself in its vicelike clutches. So forewarned, let us return to our present endeavor.

Comme promis, je vais vous révéler les secrets de la technique ultime des Dragons célestes. Mais avant cela, j'ai un aveu à vous faire...

Je vous ai dit que j'avais perdu la force des dragons à la suite de mon combat contre Nidhogg, il y a vingt ans.

En réalité cette force ne m'a pas quitté, j'ai voment choisi de m'en séparer.

Lorsque j'ai frappé Nidhogg de ma lance, son regard a croisé le mien. À ce moment, mon esprit a été submergé par un flot d'émotions.

Rage, haine, rancœur, tristesse, chagrin, solitude... Tous ces sentiments proment humains m'ont frappé de plein fouet.

La force qui réside à l'intérieur des Dragons célestes résonne et s'amplifie au contact des dragons.

J'ai choisi de l'abandonner pour ne pas me laisser subjuguer, comme cela a failli arriver à Haldrath il y a si longtemps.

Ainsi j'étais parvenu à repousser Nidhogg, mais à quel prix? Sans la force des dragons pour combattre les monstres rendus fous par sa présence, j'étais incapable de venir en aide aux habitants de Valfougère.

Au final, je n'ai pu sauver qu'un nourrisson...

Je n'ai encore jamais raconté cette histoire à Estinien, mais j'ai décidé de le faire à notre prochaine rencontre. Lui aussi doit se tenir prêt à abandonner cette force pour battre le dragon.

Peu avant qu'il ne dérobe le joyau sacré, il m'a dit qu'il plaçait son devoir de protection de la cité et son désir d'exterminer Nidhogg sur le même plan, sans distinction.

Mais il mélange les émotions: la “dévotion” et la “vengeance” sont deux énergies différentes.

Les dragons et les Dragons célestes sont mus par la même force. Sans votre foi et votre sens de la justice pour la contenir, cette énergie aura facilement raison de votre esprit. Ne l'oubliez jamais.

Wie gesagt, war ich selbst früher Azur-Drachenreiter. Und vor zwanzig Jahren verlor ich plötzlich meine besondere Kraft. Du erinnerst dich?

Das war eine Lüge. Nicht verloren habe ich sie - sondern aus eigenem Entschluss abgelegt.

Dieser Blick des Drachen, als ich ihn verwundet hatte, wie er mich glühend durchbohrte wie ein Strahl aus brennendem Hass ... Ich ... Dieses Gefühl werde ich niemals, niemals vergessen.

Doch ohne die Kraft vermochte ich die Dorfleute nicht vor den Angriffen der anderen Drachen zu schützen. Nur Estinien überlebte.

Dieses bittere Geheimnis trug ich stets in mir. Nicht einmal Estinien selbst weiß davon.

Die Heilige Stadt zu schützen und sich an dem Drachen zu rächen sei dasselbe, sagte er ...

Doch Schutz und Rache sind nicht dasselbe!

Seine Seele ist vom Hass in Brand gesetzt. Er weiß nicht, was er tut.

Wenn ich Estinien treffe, muss ich ihm alles sagen. Manchmal ... muss man auf seine Macht verzichten, um nicht von ihr verschlungen zu werden. Auch ich wollte es nicht glauben, doch dann wurde ich fast selbst ihr Opfer.
